PENCA Not for just any night. Agave spirit · open the campaign

Creative direction, photo, video and content for your brand, in days rather than months. Including the idea others would tell you can't be done.

How it used to be done. How we do it.

A photo campaign with an agency has three phases, and so does ours. What changes is what happens inside each one.

  1. 01 · Before the first photo

    With an agency

    • Brief
    • Creative proposal
    • Quote

All on paper: references and sketches. The first real photo doesn't arrive until after the shoot.

    With us

You decide with the photo in front of you

A conversation about your brand, its tone and what you want to say. From there we show you the first real images of the campaign, not a moodboard.

  2. 02 · The shoot day

    With an agency

    • Casting
    • Location
    • Photographer and crew
    • Styling and props

All of that is billed as a shoot day, and it depends on schedules, permits and the weather.

    With us

    Every scene, directed

The person, the place, the light and every object come from the concept and are written shot by shot. If the idea calls for a suitcase on a cliff or a watch strapped to a coffee pot, it gets made.

  3. 03 · After

    With an agency

    • Selection
    • Post-production and retouching
    • Adapting to every format

If you later want a different background, light or format, that means another round of retouching or a reshoot.

    With us

Changing a scene means remaking it

A different background, light, place? We remake the scene without setting up another shoot. It reaches you checked and ready as a carousel, post, story or ad.

Weeks, often months.

Days. Same judgement.

First, your tone. Then the campaigns.

We mostly work with small and medium-sized businesses that know social media matters and don't know where to start with it.

We start with a content pillar: a line of images and copy that sounds like your brand and holds from one post to the next. On that base we build the campaigns, and also the odd idea that's been on your mind for months.

  • Content pillar

Your brand's line on social, in your tone. What gets posted, how it looks and how it sounds, month by month.

  • Campaigns

A product, a venue, a collection, an event. First the concept and the claim, then each piece.

  • Photo

Product, portrait, still life and scene. The concept decides the place and the light.

  • Video

Short pieces for ads and social, with the same direction as the photos.

  • Launches

From brief to delivery.

This is how SORBO went, one of the campaigns in the gallery, from the first line of the brief to the carousel.

  1. Step 1

    Brief

A 1.2-litre insulated tumbler with a big handle and a smooth body, no step at the bottom. Three colours: lilac, peach and white.

What we received. A big tumbler, for the whole day.

  2. Step 2 · before generating anything

    Concept

The SORBO product shot, the lilac insulated tumbler, on a cream background.

“Up for anything.” Lilac, peach and white, with one strong accent per scene.

The claim comes out of the brief: a tumbler that goes with you from the moment you leave home until you're back. The product shot rules all the others.

  3. Step 3

    Scenes

Each scene is a moment of the same day: the shopping, the bus, the books.

  4. Step 4 · the favourite

Two tumblers toasting at the photocopier, under direct flash. The one that best says “up for anything”.

  5. Step 5

The gallery.

Twenty-seven product campaigns, with brands and people made up to test the method. Open any of them and you see the whole thing, with its idea and all its photos.

One flavour, one plan.

OLMO is a made-up neighbourhood ice cream parlour, with a small green cup that never changes from shot to shot. What changes is the plan, and the flavour decides it.

Mango is the deckchair on the beach. Blackberry, an afternoon snack on lilac tiles. And pistachio ends up on the bonnet of a car, with two spoons at once: you'll see it if you open the campaign in the gallery.

The label doesn't say the flavour. If we'd written it, we'd have needed one product shot per flavour, and the scoop already says it.

What gets left out.

Before delivering, we look at every image at full size. These didn't make it. Slide across each photo to see the one we threw out and the one we kept.

The PENCA bottle labelled “destilado de agave”: the version we kept.
The same bottle labelled “tequila reposado”: the version we discarded.
The label said “tequila”, and tequila is a protected designation of origin. Redone with “destilado de agave”, Spanish for agave spirit.

Anyone can generate images. Not everyone can pick the right one.

Taste. Knowing which one works, which one goes in the bin and what's missing from the one that almost works. That's the craft, and it's what you take away.

Ideas others wouldn't take on. A lamp switched on in the grass at night, an ice cream on the bonnet of a car. If the idea is good for your brand, we make it, even if a photo shoot would never have paid for it.

What are we launching?

. .

A product, a venue, a collection. One line is enough; we'll talk about the rest.
